Real Madrid captain Raul needs only one more goal to equal the record of club legend Alfredo di Stefano, who scored 307 goals.
In the last round of the Spanish Primera Liga Real beat Deportivo 1-0, and Raul scored that goal, the 306th of his career at Real.
Manager Juande Ramos substituted Raul twenty minutes from the end of the match, so the 31 year-old striker will have to wait until the next match to catch di Stefano.
That win moved Real into clear second place in the championship - Ramos' team is now three points ahead of Sevilla in third. However, the championship leaders remain Barcelona, who do not let up even in matches against the bottom teams. On the same day Barcelona scored an impressive 4-1 victory over Numancia. Two of the goals were scored by Argentinean Lionel Messi, whose possible transfer to Real is currently the hottest topic in the Spanish sporting press.
"I will never leave Barca", says Messi, brushing off all the rumours. "Are they really going to drive me out of the team? Barcelona is my home!"
