Rules for Multy Cups Tournaments

Multy Cups are Dream FTBL virtual mega-tournaments for 8 to 16,384 virtual teams. The number of participants must rise by the second power (8, 16, 32, and so on). Multy Cups tournaments are run on the Olympic system with a knockout stage, and are played in FTBL Roulette.

Multy Cups Tournaments in FTBL Roulette

The participants in the tournament lay stakes proportional to the ratings of the teams with which they enter the tournament. In this way, the team with the highest rating lays the maximum stake in the prize fund. A team with a rating that is 50% of the highest rating will lay a stake 50% of that of the leader.
As the final size of the stake can be exactly determined only after registration is completed, a sum equal to the tournament fee is frozen in each participant’s account. When registration has been completed, depending on the ratings of the participating teams, part of the stake goes into the tournament prize fund and the remainder is returned to the user.

The opposing pairs of teams in the initial stages are determined as follows: after registration the teams are arranged in the tournament grid according to their ratings (in effect, a draw). Adjacent teams in the grid play knockout matches, and the winning team adds the losing team’s rating to its own. After 3 rounds, when only one of every 8 teams remains, the first payout of winnings takes place. The team that remains has increased its rating 8 times; he receives a payout of half the sum he has accumulated in the first 3 rounds, and proceeds to the 4th round with the other half.

Example. 16,384 teams take part in a tournament. 8 adjacent teams have the following ratings: 500, 499, 498, 497, 496, 495, 494 and 493; the stake of each was equal to its rating, and the winnings of the team that remains after 3 rounds is the sum of the eight ratings divided by two, i.e. 1,986 (the winner will receive 1,986 in his hand, and will continue the tournament with the other 1,986). In this way, the coefficient of winnings for the team with the initial rating of 500 was 3.972, and for the team with the rating of 493 it was 4.03. After the first three rounds the teams have been reduced: 16384/8 = 2048 teams.

Before the fourth round the remaining teams are divided into 3 or 4 large groups (depending on the number of participants in the tournament: 512 and more – 4 groups, less than 512 – 3 groups. The first large group includes the top half of the teams in the tournament grid (i.e. the teams with high ratings), the second includes half of the remaining teams (teams with moderate ratings), and the third includes all the other teams (teams with low ratings). If the grid is split into 4 large groups, the first and second are formed in the same way, and the third is divided into two equal groups: a third group (teams with low ratings), and a fourth (teams with very low ratings).

In the fourth (play-off) round the teams play each other within the large groups as follows: the first plays the last, the second plays the next last, and so on. In this round the ratings of the opposing teams will differ much more than in the previous rounds. The losing team is eliminated, and the winning team adds the losing team’s rating to its own. In this way the ratings within the groups will even out, while the number of teams will reduce by half.

Winnings are not paid after the fourth round, but go towards the total prize fund for the tournament.

In the fifth and subsequent rounds the teams in adjacent positions in the large group play each other on a knockout basis. The ratings within the groups are approximately equal. The winner receives half of the sum of the ratings of the participants in the match.

The number of rounds before the next play-off round depends on the number of participants in the tournament. For tournaments with 4 large groups the next play-off round is the quarter-final, while for tournaments with three large groups it is the semi-final.

Example. Rounds 5 to 12: with a total of 16,384 teams it will take 7 more rounds so that 4 teams remain in Group 1, 2 in Group 2, and one each in Groups 3 and 4. The 13th (play-off) round, i.e. the quarter-final, is played along the same lines as Round 4.

The opposing teams in the play-off rounds (semi-final or quarter-final) are determined as follows: the team with the highest rating plays the team with the lowest rating, and so on. The winning team adds the rating of the losing team to its own. Winnings are not paid after a play-off round, but go towards the total prize fund for the tournament.

In Multy Cups tournaments with 8 or 16 teams, the first payout is: for 8 teams – after the first round, for 16 teams – after the second round.

If the number of teams entered for a tournament is not raised to the power of two, a qualifying round is held before the main tournament for the “surplus” teams with the lowest ratings.

Example.If , for example, 271 teams have entered a tournament instead of 256, the following algorithm is used: 271 – 256 = 15*2 = 30.
The 30 teams with the lowest ratings play each other, so that 15 remain. Their ratings and stakes are totalled . The teams are then arranged in the main grid according to their new ratings. They therefore play one more match, but move closer to the favourites.
