Diego Forlan: A Fitting End to a Phenomenal Season

As the football season draws to a close across Europe, the surprising reality is that the hero this time round is not one of Manchester United’s or Barcelona’s stars but, indeed, Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan (pictured left). The Uruguayan has had a fantastic season, scoring 31 goals in 32 appearances! He now appears to have no credible rivals neither for the title of top goal scorer in the world for this season nor the Golden Boot.

Forlan had a particularly dazzling finish, picking up a celestial 210.10 rating points in the last five games alone! Yet, just a month ago, Forlan was not even in the FTBL Top 23! He joined the list of best world forwards only on May 4 and, on May 11, grabbed the top spot.

At one point, Forlan had to contend with the rivalry of FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo (253.50 against 229.82 points), who was 20 rating points ahead of him in the charts. But Forlan needed just two weeks to brush aside the Manchester United Portuguese winger and take the undisputed lead: the gap between the two now amounts to 80 rating points (303.65 against 226.44 points)!

Forlan has repeated Ronaldo’s feat of a year ago, clearing the bar of 300 rating points. But Ronaldo still retains his record of 366.71 rating points set on April 13, 2008.
