Liverpool midfielder and Team Argentina skipper Javier Mascherano (pictured) and Bayern Munich’s Mark van Bommel are poised for a return in the FTBL Top 23 of the world’s best midfielders after World Cup 2010 qualifiers this week.
Some of the many postulants to a spot in the elite are handicapped by injuries (Michael Carrick), have been left out of their national squads (Esteban Cambiasso), while others will simply not play on June 6.
Mascherano currently has a rating of 133.93 points and will need to pick up 12 rating points when Argentina host Colombia tomorrow. Bayern’s van Bommel, who has 125.52 points over all, will need to earn 13 rating points when the Netherlands travel to Iceland.
Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has 138.43 points over all, the lower limit in the FTBL Top 23, will play for his country only on August 19, leaving plenty of time for others to fight for the coveted spots in the elite.
