It appears veteran goalkeeper Oliver Kahn had a point when he recently allowed himself to criticize his younger German colleagues: the best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga at the moment (in the FTBL ranking) is Wolfsburg’s Diego Benaglio, a Swiss, not a German. Despite Wolfsburg’s many mishaps this season, Benaglio has continued to add to his FTBL tally to finally end up at the top. But to remain there and fend off the attacks of his many rivals, the Swiss will have to further boost that number.
I t would appear Benaglio could do just that next Saturday against Mainz in Bundesliga action, given he will face a plank of just 6 rating points to beat, while a “clean” victory has the potential of netting him 14.6 rating points. But the problem is that Wolfsburg have won just 1 of their last 5 games, while Mainz have 3 wins for the same amount of games.
In general, if we assess Benaglio’s chances in battle against Werder Bremen’s Tim Wiese for the top spot in the FTBL ranking, it is clear the later has the edge: despite the fact that the two have picked up an almost identical amount of rating points in their last 5 games, it is obvious that Bremen are faring a lot better in the league at the moment. We predict that by mid November Benaglio’s FTBL rating will drop to the 80- to 85-point mark and that that will cost him the leadership in our ranking of Bundesliga goalkeepers.
