Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka (pictured) ultimately found the net of the Republic of Ireland team after relentless (but until then unsuccessful) attempts at the 72nd minute to put France ahead (1:0) before the second leg at home in the contest between the two countries for a berth in next summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
Anelka’s successful effort was actually a deflection from an Irish player into his own goal. The goal allowed the France international to retain his lead over Barcelona star and France skipper Thierry Henry (172.87 points) in the FTBL ranking of French strikers. Anelka now has an overall FTBL score of 178.98 points.
Anelka has captured the 5th in the FTBL world ranking of strikers and 2nd spot in our ranking of strikers in the English Premier League, behind teammate Didier Drogba (191.69 points).
