Chelsea’s shock loss to Manchester City cost Germany international Michael Ballack his lead in the FTBL ranking of German midfielders, as Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger (right) cruised to the top.
Schweinsteiger was still in 4th position on Friday, but the Bavarians’ home win over Borussia Monchengladbach earned him 17.05 rating points in the FTBL system, pushing his score to 131.45 points.
In his next 4 games, Schweinsteiger will have to “defend” 40.5 rating points, while Ballack will need to clear a hurdle of 40.77 rating points. Will Ballack be able to close the more than 17-point gap now between him and the new leader?
The coming Champions League games should clarify the situation somewhat, after the Bavarians take on Juventus in Turin, while Chelsea host outsiders APOEL Nicosia. It would appear Ballack, after all, has a better chance of adding to his tally and at least substantially reducing the gap with his rival.
