Atletico Madrid were stunned by a 1:5 rout away against struggling Racing de Santander in La Liga action yesterday. The defeat dealt a stinging blow to Atletico’s European ambitions, pushing them down to 7th place in the standings.
The Madrilènes conceded goal after goal, and they appeared overwhelmed by the end of the first half when they found themselves down 3 goals. Serb forward Nikola Zigic was one of the most active among Racing players, putting the final touch to the rout at the 87th minute. He was substituted soon after, under the applauses of the home crowd. He racked in an impressive 25 rating points in the game, boosting his rating to 106.30 points. He is now second only to Man United's Nemanja Vidic (131.70 points) in the rating of best Serb players.
Diego Forlan scored a consolation goal for Atletico, but the Uruguayan international still lost 11.01 rating points despite retaining his spot at the top of the rating of Uruguayan players with 154.81 points.
Villarreal also netted a crucial 2:1 win over struggling Recreativo Huelva despite conceding an early goal in the first minute form Javier Camunas. But Joseba Llorente and Ruben Cani brought 3 points to keep intact Villarreal’s European chances. Llorente earned 21.45 rating points in the game and now has 102.65 points over all.
