The top Greek football player at the moment in the FTBL ranking is Bayer Leverkusen striker Fanis Gekas (pictured left) with a score of 112.11 points.
If Gekas’ lead appears dominant, that’s just at first glance. Fact is, more than half his current score comes from the bonus earned in the 5:2 mauling of Latvia in a World Cup 2010 qualifier in which he scored 4 goals. Exceptional as his performance in that game was, it still has to be sustained by results in other games.
And here Gekas seems to have a hard time: he is not a regular first-team player at Leverkusen, coming in more often as a substitute. Yet he manages to score regularly with the national team; 8 goals this year already. Greece’s fate against Ukraine will depend heavily on how Gekas does on Saturday.
