Italian Serie A: Del Piero pulling Juventus upward

Juventus continues chasing after Inter Milan in the race for the championship in the Italian Serie A. Juventus trounced Bologna 4:1 in its latest game: Forward Alessandro del Pierro (pictured) had a double.

The game evolved in a scenario similar to that of the Manchester United—Liverpool game. Juventus had a hard time finding its marks, while Bologna, who played well in the middle and in defense, were able to open the score; Massimo Mutarelli received an excellent pass from Marco Di Vaio at the 24th minute, came one-on-one with Gianluigi Buffon, and won the battle.

But Juventus came into the second half ready to play a different tune; Hasan Salihamidzic, in his best early-years style, leveled the game after a corner kick. The goal was the first for the Bosnian international in the current championship. He earned 23.64 rating points and now has 72.05 points.

Juventus took the lead at the 71st minute through playmaker Sebastian Giovinco after a generous pass from Vincenzo Iaquinta. Juventus firmly took command of the game and initiative from then on.

Then came Del Piero’s turn. The Italian international took care of Claudio Terzi at the 75th minute and it was hard to miss from very close range. He did not stop there, making a double at the 88th. He had failed in his first attempt, when the Bologna goal keeper stopped him. But Del Piero showed determination and was eventually rewarded, making the score 4:1.

Del Piero earned a whole 30.88 rating points in the game alone and now has 149.17 points. The 39-year-old forward has scored 9 goals so far in the current season. Juventus still trail leaders Inter Milan in the standings by 7 points (in second position) 10 games before the end of the tournament.
