Italy: Big win not much help for Juventus

Juventus of Turin inflicted a humiliating 4:1 defeat to AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in the 29th day of the Italian Serie A, but the big win did nothing to reduce the gap that separates coach Claudio Ranieri’s team and Inter Milan; the Nerroazuri reserved the same humiliating faith for Regina by beating them 3:0.

The match remained rather uneventful up to the middle of the first half. But Juve were able to grab the lead in the 34th minute: Vincenzo Iaquinta (pictured left) found the net with a distant shot from the edge of the 18-meter area.

But Roma came right back in the opening minutes of the second half: Simone Loria headed in a cross from Max Tonetto. Juve restored their lead at the 55th when Iaquinta grabbed a second for himself. The match was particularly successful for the Italy striker, as he collected a whopping 34.60 rating points, to put him at 115.22 overall.

Juve took control of the game after this second goal and were able to add another two: first was Olof Mellberg, who collected 17.00 rating points in the game and joined the list of best Serie A defenders with 89.23 points. The humiliation for Roma was concluded by veteran Pavel Nedved (pictured right) after he came in as a substitute as if asking himself: “Could it be I hurried by deciding to conclude my career?”

Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a double in the Inter Milan Reggina game, while the third for Internazionale was scored by Esteban Cambiasso. The gap between Claudio Ranieri’s team and Inter Milan remains at 7 points with nine games to go in the championship. AC Milan, which is third, again lost two points after a goalless draw against Napoli.
