Makelele retiring

French former international Claude Makelele (pictured) has decided to put an end to his illustrious career. The legendary French skipper, who turned 36 last February, is currently playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

“I’ll end my career this year but will continue to work for PSG as sports director, because I want the club to regain its lost glory. When I transferred to PSG, the team was fighting for survival. Now I am happy I could help, but I am preparing to hang my boots in June. Time has come to make way for the young,” Makelele announced.

PSG has not displayed substantive football in its most recent matches: they conceded 7 goals in their last two alone. Makelele lost almost 30 rating points in those matches, and the once irreplaceable French team midfielder is not even amongst the best players of the French Ligue 1. He has 64.03 points.

Makelele had had better times in his career: in 2002, he won the Champions League with Real Madrid, and last year his team Chelsea narrowly lost the same trophy to Manchester United.

In the French national team, he missed on the most important titles: he did not take part in the successful 1998 World Cup and 2000 Euro campaigns. He had to make due with a silver medal in the 2006 World Cup.
